The Global Opportunity Youth Network (GOYN) Annual Convening is a vital platform for GOYN’s Community Partners and Youth Leaders worldwide to exchange insights and advance the transformation of youth livelihoods.
Held from 17th to 21st November 2024, this year’s convening embraced the theme “Transforming Youth Livelihoods: Pathways to Full Potential.”
Hosted by Lighthouse Communities Foundation (LCF), GOYN’s Anchor Partner in India, in collaboration with Global Development Incubator and GOYN Aspen, the five-day event in Pune brought together a record number of Opportunity Youth leaders, Community Partners, distinguished speakers, and global delegates.
With the invaluable support of Pune Municipal Corporation and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, the convening fostered an inspiring and inclusive atmosphere for meaningful dialogue and collaboration.
The grand Opening Ceremony at Balewadi Stadium featured notable figures, including Mr. Eric Garcetti, Former US Ambassador to India, alongside global leaders from Aspen Institute, GDI, and City Commissioners. The discussions centered on the pivotal role of youth in shaping the future, addressing challenges, and harnessing opportunities in an ever-evolving landscape. A standout moment was the participation of over 2,500 alumni from Lighthouse Communities Foundation, who shared their transformative journeys, accompanied by an enriching showcase of India’s cultural heritage.
A compelling keynote address by Professor john a. powell, Founder & Director of the Othering & Belonging Institute at UC Berkeley, emphasized the power of ‘belonging’ in dismantling systemic inequities. He highlighted the necessity of co-creation and co-design in crafting targeted solutions for Opportunity Youth.
“Belonging without othering” – a concept affirming that everyone has a birthright to belong, irrespective of background, age, or nationality.
Throughout the five-day convening, plenary sessions, workshops, masterclasses, and site visits tackled systemic barriers to equity while spotlighting innovative strategies for creating sustainable, inclusive economic opportunities. Key discussions focused on youth empowerment through leadership, financial inclusion, job creation, and AI, reinforcing the importance of youth-led initiatives and storytelling.
Interactions at Lighthouse Centers and within communities provided invaluable insights into grassroots efforts and scalable solutions. The Youth Advisory Group (YAG) played a crucial role in advocacy and strategy, infusing vibrancy into the convening through cultural performances and a showcase of diverse entrepreneurial ventures.
Youth emcees energized the event, embodying the spirit of youth engagement and enthusiasm. The convening was a journey of learning, networking, and cultural exchange—leaving participants inspired and equipped with knowledge for continued impact.
The GOYN movement continues with a steadfast commitment to transforming youth livelihoods and unlocking their full potential. Five days of collaboration, innovation, and celebration reaffirmed our shared mission of fostering inclusive economic growth and opportunity.
